Chapter 11 – Shaun.

The morning light beams through the curtains in the motel room.

Yesterday, I didn’t really notice how bad this place was. Stains cover the walls, the nets that hang in the window have rips in them, the wicker chair in the corner has seen better days.

A few days ago, I'd have been calling the motel inspector out to condemn the place. But right now, I don’t give a fucking shit.

I cover Brim back up with the cover as she stirs beside me, her long brown hair spread out over the pillow as she snuggles herself further into my side. Gently moving a small strand of her hair, I push it behind her ear.

The effect she's had on me since she bumped into me at the airport in Paris… Well, let's say it's been a while since anyone has made me feel this way. I'm not the dating type. I don’t do girlfriends, mainly because I’m a loner, but I enjoy that. I am content in my own space, in my own head. Truthfully, I enjoy my own company. I don’t think I’ve ever dated any woman who has been okay with that in the past.

Last night though, damn, it’s one I won’t forget in a while. I really did mean it in a good way when I said she's something else. Brimley's a breath of fresh air; she's kind and caring. She could have flicked me off yesterday and told me to stick it where the sun doesn’t shine, but she didn’t. Fruit Loop doesn’t judge.

What happens now? With us?

“I can hear the cogs turning in that head of yours, you know,” her sleepy voice says. I smile down at her. “Sorry,” I mutter.

“What are you thinking about?” she asks, while wrapping her arm around my waist and throwing her leg over mine. You is what I wanna say but stop myself.

“That train. I think I'm gonna head over to the motel reception and see if they have word yet. Try and grab some food for us while I'm at it.”

She looks up at me with a frown on her face. “Oh, okay,” she says, her tone sad.

“What's wrong, Brim?” I ask, while lifting my hand up to cup her cheek.

She stares into my eyes a little longer before responding. “Happy Christmas Eve, Mr Grinch.”

“You had to go there, didn’t you?” I smirk before tickling her side.

Yelping out in pain, she jumps. “Ouch!” she cries out and I throw the covers back to look at her hip.

Shit, I'd forgotten about that. Fuck, what if I’ d caused more damage last night? I should have taken her to the hospital, not fucked her.

“Shaun, it’s okay. It's just a little sore, that’s all. I'm okay,” she tries to reassure me but I'm already looking over her skin. The bruise that was forming last night has now fully come out in a black and blue mark, covering her cream skin from the top of her leg up to her ribs on one side.
